Are You Serious about Your Work at Home Business?

Are you Serious about Your Work at Home Business? by Nicole Dean

Are you treating your business like a Fortune 500 Company or like a Yard Sale? Take this quiz to find out.

How would you describe your Office?
a.) Corporate or b.) Chaos

Which word describes you personal appearance while you’re working?
a.) Success or b.) Mess

And, how would you describe your attitude towards your business?
a.) Winner or b.) Winging-it

If you chose only ‘a’ answers, then congratulations! You’re thinking like a Fortune 500 company!

If you chose even one ‘b’ answer, then keep reading…

We oftentimes think “What does it matter what my desk looks like? And, who cares what I look like in front of my computer at home. Nobody can see me.”

Well, it does matter. It matters, because you matter and because your business matters. And, if you treat your business like something of value and take care of it, it’ll take care of you. And why shouldn’t you? Your business is just as important as any Fortune 500 Company. It’s yours and it’s special.

Here are some steps to take today.

1. No more working in chaos.
Make your office a “no toy zone”. Your office is your turf. Protect it. If you have little office helpers, then establish one area that can have toys, perhaps a basket or drawer – and don’t let it spread.

2. No more working in jammies.
You wouldn’t show up to work at IBM or Microsoft in your fuzzy bunny slippers, would you? You don’t need to wear a suit, but simply feeling more professional will lead to more professional results.

3. No more amateur phone message
Review the outgoing message on your answering machine. Does it sound like the office of a professional or like chaos central? Rerecord it to make a good first impression upon clients when they call.

4. No more ‘winging it’.
Begin each day with a list of six jobs that you want to accomplish. If you make the list achievable with small goals, you’ll feel much better about at the end of the day.

Are you ready to treat your business like a valuable Fortune 500 company? I hope you’ll take your first step today towards success.

Work at Home Job vs. Work at Home Business

Work at Home Job vs. Work at Home Business by Susanne Myers

One way or another you have come to the conclusion that the daily commute to corporate America just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Or maybe, you have already been able to stay home with your kids for a while, but now need some extra income.

One way or another, you have decided its about time to become a work at home mom or WAHM.

This is an exciting journey and there are many decisions to make along the way.

One of the first decisions you are going to have to make is whether you would be better off with a work at home job or a work at home business. Either one of them could be the right fit for you, so let’s take a moment to explore the advantages as well as the disadvantages of each.

Let’s start with a work at home job. There are lots of options out there and some of the advantages and disadvantages may not apply to some of them, but in general you’ll find the following. Hands down the greatest advantage of a job is that you’ll receive a regular paycheck. If you put 40 hours of work in, you know you’ll get paid for those 40 hours. With most WAH Jobs you can also count on getting about the same amount of hours. It allows you to plan your day and week around your work schedule easily. You do not need any upfront investment. Please stay away from work at home jobs that ask you for any type of fee. They are scams. Don’t waist your time and money. The last advantage of a job I would like to mention is that you’ll get instant rewards with a job. You work one week, you’ll get paid the next. No need to keep yourself motivated to keep working. You’ll be rewarded by your paycheck at the end of the week.

Now don’t run out and get a job quite yet. There is a backside to all this as well. You will still have a boss that tells you what to do. You can also lose a job on a moments notice. You are not building any residual income that would allow you to slow down after you put some time into it. Unless you are putting money into a 401K, you won’t get paid once you stop working. A job also allows you less flexibility. Your boss and colleagues are depending on you work.

This being said, lets move on to a work at home business. Yes, just the idea of it seems daunting, but there are thousands of work at home moms, that start profitable businesses every year. With some planning and determination you can do the same if you choose to do so. Many of us have grown up in households of jobholders. A business seems to be this scary, risky entity. It really isn’t though and there are so many great resources on this site and elsewhere that will guide you along the way. Take a good look at the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own business and make a decision on the facts and what you think would work best for you and your family. Please do not let fear make this decision for you.

Lets take a look at the advantages of a WAH business. You are going to be your own boss. You call the shots. This gives you a large amount of freedom on how you run your business, how you treat your customers etc. It also allows you a large amount of flexibility. If you’d rather work on your website today instead of writing a sales copy, go for it. As long as you keep things balanced and get everything done that needs attention, you can allow yourself a lot of flexibility. You can also move at your own pace. There isn’t anybody (other than your bank account) that you are slowing down if you decide to spend the day at the park with your kids instead of taking inventory. You are also the one that determines how much you make. The harder you work, and the better you get at this, the more money you will make. At a job you get an hourly wage or a salary that’s reviewed about once year. With a business it is up to you to generate as much income as you would like. Your own business also allows you to change with times as your interests or markets change. You may start out as the owner of a dating site, but then become much more interested in wedding planning.

Don’t get me wrong, owning a business does have its disadvantages as well. You usually have to invest at least a small amount of money and most definitely a lot of time upfront. This is not an instant reward kind of thing. You may be working for months without seeing much of a monetary reward. You’ll have to be prepared to live without much of a paycheck for a while. If you are currently working, you may want to consider keeping your job for a while and building your business in your spare time.

No matter what you decide, I would like to congratulate you for taking the first steps to becoming a work at home mom. Always keep in mind that the reason you are doing all this is to be able to spend more time with your kids, to get them out of daycare, to bring home a check to help with expenses or whatever else your reason may be. It isn’t always going to be easy to balance family life and work life, particularly when they start happening in the same house. But keep the reason why you are doing this in mind and you’ll get through it. And don’t forget to have some fun along the way.

But I Need To Make Money Now: How To Work from Home

But I Need to Make Money Now: How to Work from Home by Alice Seba

A subscriber to my newsletter recently asked:

“Hi. My question is where do I start? I have been with a couple of programs for a few months now and I'm getting nowhere fast. I just want to earn some extra money so we are not broke all the time we can never seem to get ahead, please help me.” This is a situation many of us find ourselves in when we decide we'd like to work from home or start a new business. The problem is, most businesses take time to build. It takes time to find customers, recruits and secure a reliable income. If you've been a subscriber to my newsletter long, you'll know that I am always talking about passive and residual income -- and working less, while working more. However, this is not how I started working from home. I was like you and I needed to make money NOW!
So, what did I do? I could have done what many other mothers do and try to apply for every telecommuting job listing out there. Problem is, there are so many scams and there are always way more applicants than jobs. It is not EASY to get a company to hire you from a job posting.

Instead of going that route, I created my own opportunity. I found people who needed my help and I provided it to them. Let me explain how it happened for me and maybe you can apply this to your own quest to work from home too.
I've always been a half-decent writer and I knew a lot of online business owners struggled with writing for their businesses. Well, there was my in. I created a copywriting service to write articles, press releases and search engine friendly copy for these business owners.
It was kind of like a job, but I did it from home and I chose which hours I wanted to work. Yes, I still had to meet deadlines, but it was nothing like carting the kids to daycare every morning to drag my feet into a boring-old office every day.
I began by finding just a few people who needed my services. I did a great job, so they offered me more work and they also sent me referrals and soon enough I had TOO MUCH WORK.
Of course, this is the short-version of the story. There was a LOT of hard work involved acquiring the clients and I had to put in long, hard hours in writing to get paid. As my friend, Sylvie Charrier, says about working from home:
"You will not be spending more time with your family. You'll be home more, but you will have no time to spend."
That may sound a bit grim, but as you develop your service-based business and possibly outsource some of the regular tasks, things do become easier and less labor-intensive. However, the point is you should not expect a magical life where people pay you to hang out with your children. It's not going to happen that way.
But enough negativity, let's talk about you and what services you can offer. It's time to put modesty aside and take an inventory of the things you are good at and even the things you may enjoy. Whether it be:
data entry
spreadsheets
graphic design
website design
article writing
copywriting
bookkeeping
scheduling
collections
systems analysis
research
translation
transcription
event planning
menu planning
or any other service (those are just a few ideas off the top of my head), there are plenty of people and businesses that need help in these areas. It's up to you to establish yourself as an efficient provider of those services and secure those first few clients.
The thing is, if you need money now...you either need a regular J-O-B (who wants one of those?!) or you need to start getting paid for the work you do. You can sign up for every opportunity under the sun, but you don't get paid until you sell product or sign up productive recruits. If you can create a service and deliver it to people in need, they will pay you for your time and you can pay your bills.
I mentioned my friend, Sylvie earlier because she also faced the same dilemma. Her husband left her with 3 children to care for. She had no job and no money. She created her own opportunities, just like I did and just like you will. Her first project netted her $2400 and the next, $10,000. She used her skills and knowledge to deliver a service that people needed --- and she'll never tell you that it wasn't grueling work to accomplish those goals, but she did it. She now runs an international company that provides support services to businesses all over the world and it all started with her finding her own opportunities.
Sylvie has also created a guide to help you create your own opportunities. This guide prepares you for the realities of working from home, avoiding pitfalls and scams, marketing yourself online, landing contracts with winning cover letters and resumes and where to find the best opportunities.
